Daily multivitamins could support independence in older adults.

The recent study presented at NUTRITION 2026 suggests that daily multivitamin supplementation may enhance functional health in older adults. Over three years, participants aged 60 and older who took a multivitamin reported notably better performance in everyday activities compared to those who received a placebo.

Dr. Bayu B. Bekele stated that the research focuses on practical functional health rather than just disease prevention, indicating that multivitamins could be a beneficial, low-risk addition for older adults. Participants in the study, which included over 16,000 adults from the COcoa Supplement Multivitamins Outcomes Study (COSMOS), were either given a daily multivitamin, a cocoa extract, both, or placebos.

Results showed significant improvements in functional health scores, particularly concerning symptom burden and physical ability. While cocoa extract did not notably impact functional health scores across the board, it did show benefits for participants with congestive heart failure.

Researchers stress that while these findings are promising, supplements should not replace a balanced diet or physical activity, and individuals should consult a doctor before starting any new supplementation. The results, regarded as preliminary, await further validation in peer-reviewed publications.
