Jupiter resident claims he was defrauded of $700,000 in a romantic investment scheme.

A 67-year-old man from Jupiter, Florida, named Karl Geissler, recently shared that he lost over $700,000 in a “pig butchering” scam, which combines romance and fraudulent cryptocurrency investments. His ordeal began with a random text message from a woman named Aileen, with whom he developed an emotional connection. As their relationship progressed, she introduced him to what she claimed were lucrative investment opportunities managed by her aunt.

Geissler, initially investing small amounts, was convinced to sell his family home and his pool maintenance business to fund these “investments.” At one point, he thought he had nearly $1.09 million in his account. However, as time passed, communication with Aileen dwindled, leaving him devastated and without the funds he thought he was building for a future together.

Now, Geissler is relying on a bicycle for transportation while searching for work and staying in a hotel. He emphasizes his determination to rebuild his life despite the significant loss and has shared his story in the hopes of warning others about similar scams. Friends have set up a GoFundMe to assist him in his recovery.

The “pig butchering” scam is characterized by gaining trust over time before financially exploiting victims through false investment opportunities in cryptocurrencies. The name symbolizes the process of “fattening” victims before their financial exploitation. For more details on this type of scam, resources are available from the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
