Logan Hill’s Project Hope aims to teach students about growing food and flowers through STEM education, while also imparting valuable life skills. Operating from April to October, Alcoa students dedicate their Saturday mornings to learning gardening techniques and donating their produce to seniors in the community.
The program integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in various tasks, from planning garden layouts to pest management. Additionally, Hill emphasizes financial literacy; each participant receives a monthly stipend and must save half of their earnings. To enhance their financial education, Hill consulted financial advisor Davett Jones, who introduced the students to stock market investing. Over two years, Jones has taught them essential concepts in finance, including reading stock reports and understanding market dynamics.
Recently, Charles Robinson, a local business owner, spoke to the students about entrepreneurship and long-term savings strategies. He encouraged them to save 10% of their earnings in a jar to witness the growth of their money over time.
Hill hopes the students will apply what they learn about financial growth and share their knowledge with their families and communities.
