RFK Jr.’s Meat-Dominated Food Pyramid Needs Land as Big as California

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is advocating for Americans to adopt new dietary guidelines that emphasize red meat as a key component of a healthy diet. These guidelines encourage greater intake of protein, vegetables, and healthy fats, while simultaneously advocating for a reduction in sugar and processed food consumption. However, The Guardian has reported concerns from the World Resources Institute (WRI). Their analysis suggests that a 25 percent increase in red meat consumption would necessitate an additional 100 million acres of farmland for livestock—an area comparable to the size of California.

Richard Waite, director of agriculture initiatives at WRI, expressed that the expansion of agriculture is a primary driver of deforestation, stating, “We are seeing millions of acres of forest cut down.” He emphasized that food systems significantly influence the planet’s ecosystems, particularly noting that increased meat consumption raises greenhouse gas emissions and leads to further deforestation.

Diego Rose, the director of nutrition at Tulane University, added his perspective to the discussion. “To the extent that people follow these guidelines and eat more animal protein foods, particularly beef and dairy, they will negatively impact our environment,” he told The Guardian.

In a response to the situation, a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services remarked to the Daily Beast, “The Trump administration will no longer weaponize federal food policy to destroy the livelihoods of hard-working American ranchers and protein producers under the radical dogma of the Green New Scam.”
