TWEPI and Invest WindsorEssex CEO Hails New Bridge as a ‘Transformative Development’ – AM 800 CKLW

The CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) and Invest WindsorEssex, Gordon Orr, has declared the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge a transformative event. Attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony with various dignitaries, Orr emphasized that the bridge’s opening, planned for noon on Monday, will significantly enhance trade, commerce, and tourism in Windsor-Essex.

This new crossing is set to alleviate congestion at the Ambassador Bridge and streamline cross-border trade, supporting $300 billion in annual trade and facilitating 400 commercial vehicle crossings per hour. Orr highlighted the importance of reliable cross-border movements for businesses and tourism.

He also noted upcoming enhancements, such as a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrians that will open on August 5, further benefiting tourism. Describing the bridge as an “iconic piece,” Orr sees it as a crucial visual asset for attracting visitors and supporting local economies.

The Canadian-only ceremony followed the cancellation of a joint event with the U.S. due to tariff threats, reflecting ongoing complexities in international relations. Construction of the $6.4 billion bridge began in 2018, featuring six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes, and 60 inspection lanes for Canada and the U.S.
