LG Display to allocate $2 billion, backed by government aid, to counter Chinese competition

LG Display’s Investment in OLED Technology

South Korean display manufacturer LG Display Co. is set to invest 3 trillion won (approximately $2.03 billion) in advancing next-generation small- and medium-sized organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies. This investment is supported by substantial government financing, highlighting South Korea’s strategy to maintain its technological edge over Chinese competitors.

Government Support

The investment plan includes a low-interest loan of 1.3 trillion won from the National Growth Fund, aligning with the government’s initiative to bolster key advanced industries. LG Display will contribute 1.5 trillion won of its own capital and secure an additional 200 billion won through private loans.

Focus Areas

The funding will primarily be directed toward:

  • Enhancing manufacturing processes for small and medium-sized OLED panels
  • Advancing low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) processes for smartphones
  • Developing tandem OLED technology to improve brightness and lifespan
  • Creating hybrid OLED panels for laptops and tablets

These technologies are crucial as demand increases for energy-efficient displays and lightweight designs in the IT sector.

Competition with Chinese Manufacturers

While Korean companies like LG Display pioneered OLED technology, they face stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers who have rapidly increased their market share. In the previous year, Korea held 68.7% of the global OLED market, while China’s share rose to 31.2%. Continuous investment in innovation and next-generation technologies is essential to maintain a competitive edge.

Industry Insights

Experts emphasize the importance of accelerating technological advancement rather than merely increasing output, as the success of this investment hinges on how quickly LG Display can bring these innovations to market. Industry officials note that the key challenge will be to leverage government support effectively to speed up development timelines for new technologies.
