He highlighted that certain squishy toys containing gels or liquids might be confiscated in hand luggage, creating confusion for families. During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Calder discussed the potential trauma for children who rely on these toys as comfort items during stressful travel situations.
The rules for what is allowed in hand luggage can differ significantly by airport. Calder noted places like Belfast, Birmingham, and Gatwick may have inconsistent regulations. While many UK airports still enforce a 100ml liquid limit, some may allow larger amounts under specific conditions, leading to further confusion.
To avoid issues, the Department for Transport advises travelers to check the airport rules beforehand and consider placing liquid-filled toys in hold luggage.
