Researchers from Zoe and King’s College London conducted a six-week study to evaluate Daily30, a plant-based blend meant to enhance gut health. They compared it to a probiotic supplement with the well-researched strain Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG and a control group consuming croutons. Results indicated that Daily30 significantly altered the gut microbiome, with 57 bacterial species changing in abundance compared to just 14 and 4 in the other groups.
Dr. Sarah Berry highlighted the importance of plant diversity and varied fibers for shaping the microbiome, emphasizing that this blend nourishes existing gut bacteria rather than introducing isolated strains. Participants who consumed Daily30 reported improvements in energy and gastrointestinal symptoms like reduced constipation and indigestion. However, there were minimal changes in blood profiles and body measurements.
The study suggests that a diverse plant-based diet can promote favorable gut microbiome changes, advocating for further research in varied populations to explore long-term health benefits. The findings were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.
