New ‘Trump Accounts’ Available for Iowa Families
Iowa families can now take advantage of ‘Trump Accounts’, a new investment tool inspired by the Trump Administration’s ‘One Big Beautiful’ bill. Parents can contribute up to $5,000 annually, with an enticing feature: the federal government will invest $1,000 for any child born between 2025 and 2028.
Steve Yerkes, a certified financial planner, notes that an account started at birth could potentially grow significantly. With an 8% annual return, a $1,000 investment made at birth could double over time, reaching about $16,000 by age 36.
These accounts function like traditional individual retirement accounts and can be used for higher education or home purchases. However, experts advise that they shouldn’t replace existing options like 529 education savings plans. Dr. Sean Severe emphasizes that while Trump Accounts enhance investment opportunities, a 529 plan remains a superior choice for education savings.
Access to the funds begins at age 18, though penalties apply if the money is withdrawn early, except for education and home purchases. Financial experts recommend keeping the funds untouched for long-term growth. Fotis Grigoris highlights that children, upon turning 18, will make their own financial decisions, which may or may not align with long-term saving goals.
While the initiative is described as pro-family and supportive of long-term financial stability, critics argue it may exacerbate the wealth gap, as low-income families might struggle to contribute additional funds.
