SCHOOL’S OUT: Free Bus Rides for Children to Begin During Summer Holiday as Part of Cost of Living Support

Free Bus Travel for Children in England This Summer

As schools close for the summer, starting August 1 until August 31, all children aged 5 to 15 in England will enjoy free bus travel.

Details of the Scheme

  • Cost Savings: Families can save the usual fares of £1 to £2 on participating buses.
  • Current Benefits: Free travel is already available for children under 5 on main bus routes.
  • Additional Discounts: The initiative accompanies discounted children’s meals in restaurants, theatre tickets, and visits to attractions like theme parks and adventure centres.

Government Support

Roads Minister Simon Lightwood emphasizes that this scheme not only lowers travel costs but also supports families facing a cost-of-living squeeze. Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, reiterated the commitment to making public transport more accessible, with additional measures like the £3 bus fare cap extended until March 2027 and a rail fare freeze announced for the first time in 30 years.

Local Leaders’ Perspective

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, expressed enthusiasm about the scheme, stating it significantly helps families explore local attractions.

Andrew Stokes, Director of VisitEngland, highlighted that this initiative allows families to discover England’s diverse attractions while being environmentally friendly.

Families are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and explore various destinations throughout the summer.
