Free Public Transport for Children in the Netherlands
Starting in 2027, children up to the age of 12 will be able to travel for free on public transport, as announced by the transport companies consortium Dova.
Key Highlights:
- Currently, children can travel for free until the age of 3 and can use a specific subscription for national rail operator NS.
- The initiative aims to encourage public transport usage among families, especially those on tight budgets. Junior infrastructure minister Annet Bertram stated that this move helps introduce children to public transport early.
- Young travellers must be accompanied by a paying adult, who can bring up to three children at a time.
- The existing nationwide discount for those over 65 will be discontinued starting in 2027.
Successful Summer Initiative
In addition, a recently introduced unlimited summer rail pass has drawn significant interest, with 175,000 people purchasing the €49-a-month pass that offers off-peak travel across all domestic train services.
