Kickshaws Bakery Opens in Northside
Kickshaws, known for its gluten-free, vegan, and allergen-friendly baked goods, has opened its first Richmond location at 4028 MacArthur Ave. in Bellevue. The bakery operates in a 500-square-foot space within The Bellevue, a redevelopment of the former Samis Grotto Temple.
Offerings and Operational Details
Kickshaws provides counter service and bakes a selection of items on-site, including cookies and cinnamon rolls. The bakery also offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches and espresso, with most goods made in Fredericksburg and delivered daily. Owner Kathy Paz-Craddock notes that about half a dozen items are baked on-site for optimal freshness.
Market Presence and Expansion
Kickshaws has established a local following by wholesaling its products to specialty markets and participating in local vendor markets. The bakery’s hamburger buns are featured at local restaurants like Toast and Cobra Burger. Paz-Craddock aims to expand the wholesale aspects of the business.
Challenges and Community Engagement
The opening was delayed due to contractor issues and a lease dispute, but to maintain community awareness, Kickshaws held pop-up events outside the storefront during the renovation. The bakery has signed a five-year lease in its new location.
Business Background
Founded over a decade ago in response to the Paz-Craddock family’s dietary needs related to celiac disease and dairy allergies, Kickshaws started as a grocery store before evolving into a pop-up bakery. It opened its first dedicated bakery in Fredericksburg in 2020.
Kickshaws shares its location with Homme Essentials, a menswear store, and Sun Theory, a gift shop.
