Erbil Investment Update: Strong Growth and Diversification
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The General Directorate of Investment in Erbil has granted a total of 850 investment licenses in the region, highlighting a positive shift in investor confidence as local authorities focus on economic diversification and private sector growth.
Recent Developments
Speaking to Kurdistan24, Saman Arab, the Director General of Investment, revealed that nearly 50 licenses were issued in the first half of 2026 alone, indicating sustained interest in Erbil as a prime investment destination. Arab expressed optimism that this year’s total could exceed the 100 licenses granted throughout 2025, thanks to various incentives provided by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
“Investors’ attention remains focused on Erbil,” Arab noted, emphasizing a hopeful trajectory for investment activities in the city.
Key Sectors of Focus
Erbil’s investment initiatives span 11 different sectors, particularly prioritizing those that can create numerous job opportunities. Arab highlighted industry, tourism, and agriculture as the top areas attracting strategic investment, alongside other sectors like commerce, education, and healthcare.
Investment-Friendly Environment
Since the enactment of the Kurdistan Region’s Investment Law No. 4 in 2006, the KRG has implemented several measures to draw both local and international investors, including:
- Tax exemptions
- Land allocation
- Business incentives tailored for stimulating private sector growth
Economic Resilience Amid Challenges
Despite the ongoing economic challenges in Iraq and public financial fluctuations, Erbil remains an attractive hub for investment. Officials view the expansion of the private sector as crucial for sustainable development, job creation, and long-term economic resilience in the Kurdistan Region, reflecting a commitment to moving beyond hydrocarbon dependency.
Erbil’s relatively stable security environment and modern infrastructure combine to make it a favorable location for investment in the region.
