Benefits of Fish Oil Supplements: A Quick Guide for You

The recent study from USC School of Medicine explored the effects of high-dose docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, on cognitive function in older adults at risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 365 participants aged 55 to 80, nearly half of whom carried the APOE ε4 allele, a known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s.

Key Findings:

  1. DHA Levels in the Brain:

    • DHA supplementation of 2,000 mg daily resulted in a 17% increase in DHA levels in cerebrospinal fluid after six months, confirming that DHA reaches the brain regardless of APOE ε4 status.
  2. Cognitive Function and Brain Structure:

    • No significant improvements were observed in memory or cognitive performance after 24 months between those taking DHA and those on a placebo. There were also no notable changes in hippocampal volume, a critical area for memory.
  3. Potential Reasons for Lack of Benefit:

    • Enzyme Disruption: An enzyme (cPLA2) might degrade DHA before it can be effectively integrated into brain cell structures vital for cognition.
    • Health Factors: Many participants had cardiovascular issues, which could hinder the effects of DHA.
    • Age and Baseline Cognitive Status: The participants may not have experienced enough cognitive decline during the short trial to observe potential protective effects.

Overall, despite the ability of DHA to reach the brain, the study suggests that fish oil supplements may not offer protective benefits against cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease.
