Local and State Officials Take Steps to Prevent New World Screwworm Spread
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Following recent confirmed cases of New World Screwworm in Jim Hogg County and Nuevo Laredo, officials are intensifying efforts to prevent its spread.
Preparedness in Webb County
Webb County Commissioner Jesse Gonzalez emphasized the importance of readiness, noting that Webb County, the sixth largest in Texas, covers vast areas with numerous ranches and livestock.
Collaboration Among Officials
State officials are collaborating with local county representatives to discuss strategies for addressing the potential threat posed by the Screwworm.
Moving Animals Safely
Texas Senator Judith Zaffirini has established protocols for moving livestock within affected zones. Inspections by accredited veterinarians or certified inspectors are mandatory for movement clearance.
Inspection and Sample Collection
Texas Animal Health Commission inspectors conduct inspections and collect larvae samples for lab analysis, with results expected within 48 to 72 hours.
Euthanization Measures
Eric Garza from the South Texas Borderlands District highlighted that animals displaying severe wounds indicative of the Screwworm may be euthanized to curb further spread.
Pet Travel Regulations
Traveling pet owners must ensure their pets are cleared of New World Screwworm before crossing borders. U.S. Customs and Border Protection stresses that pets must have proper health documentation.
Statewide Inspections
Over 4,000 animals have been inspected statewide, with no cases found in wildlife thus far.
