A federal judge has blocked new restrictions on the foods that can be purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in Iowa and four other states. The changes, effective January 1, prohibited the purchase of sugary drinks and candy with SNAP benefits as part of initiatives from the Trump Administration aimed at promoting healthier eating.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that the USDA overstepped its authority, siding with a lawsuit from the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, which represented affected SNAP recipients. Plaintiffs, including an Iowan named Marc Craig, argued that the restrictions compromised their ability to access foods necessary for managing health conditions like diabetes and kidney disease.
Governor Kim Reynolds criticized the ruling, stating that SNAP’s guidelines need to be revised to address rising obesity rates. The USDA expressed its continued commitment to promoting healthier choices within SNAP.
