Report: Rising Number of Shoppers Prioritize Cost Over Nutrition

Canadians are increasingly prioritizing cost over nutrition in their grocery shopping due to rising food prices and the overall cost of living. A recent survey from Dalhousie University indicates that 64.1% of Canadians have changed their grocery buying habits, with 86.4% now more price-conscious. Approximately 45.5% are prioritizing cost over nutritional value, and many express concern about the long-term health impacts of these choices.

Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab, highlights the vulnerability felt by shoppers, noting that many are making trade-offs in nutrition. Lower-income Canadians and Millennials are particularly affected, with higher proportions indicating concerns about food quality due to costs.

In response, many Canadians are shopping at discount and dollar stores more frequently and reducing their meat consumption. They are also utilizing strategies to minimize waste and are considering home gardening as a way to offset grocery expenses. Overall, the current inflationary environment has led to significant shifts in how Canadians approach food shopping, with a greater emphasis on frugality.
