Reconsider Relying on Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements for Fracture Prevention

It’s a troubling reality that aging brings both a decline in balance and reduced bone density, posing increased risks for falls and fractures among older adults. Indeed, one-third of individuals aged 65 and older will experience a fall, with serious injuries often occurring. While many turn to supplements like calcium and vitamin D to strengthen bones, recent research from a meta-review published in The BMJ reveals disappointing news: these supplements may not effectively prevent falls and fractures.

Despite calcium being vital for muscle function and bone formation, alongside vitamin D’s crucial role in calcium absorption, a systematic review involving over 153,000 adults showed no significant impact from these supplements. In light of this, researchers suggest focusing on environmental changes to minimize fall risks and engaging in resistance exercises to boost balance and muscle strength.

Instead of relying on supplements, taking up weight training could be a more beneficial route for maintaining bone health.
