Are SNAP Benefits at Risk of Delay from Government Shutdown?

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has strongly criticized the Trump Administration over the federal government shutdown, warning that approximately 3 million residents in her state risk losing their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. She emphasized the urgency, stating, “Lives depend on this,” and urged Washington Republicans to finalize the federal funding necessary for states to provide families with essential support to prevent hunger.

Similarly, New Jersey’s Department of Human Services has raised concerns, indicating that SNAP benefits for November may be delayed if the shutdown continues. They warned recipients that it remains uncertain whether benefits loaded onto EBT cards before October 31, 2025, will be usable after November 1, 2025.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy echoed these concerns, criticizing the Trump Administration’s SNAP cuts, labeling them as measures that complicate life for working Americans.
