Gluten-Free Essentials Become a Luxury Item as Small Branded Loaf Approaches £4 Due to Inflation

The rising costs of gluten-free food products have become a pressing concern for those who require these items for medical reasons, such as coeliac disease. Shoppers are increasingly frustrated as the prices for gluten-free staples, including bread and biscuits, soar. A small gluten-free loaf can cost nearly £4, while a standard white loaf is often less than £1. Consumers have noted substantial increases in pricing, particularly since the onset of economic disruptions, including the Iran war’s impact on food prices.

Alison Peters, who operates the website Coeliac Sanctuary, highlights that gluten-free label products are not just smaller but pricier, making it difficult for families with multiple members who need such diets to manage their grocery bills. Many report spending significantly more on gluten-free items than on standard products, with a weekly grocery bill potentially being 35% higher for gluten-free foods.

In addition to concerns regarding affordability, there are accessibility issues. Nicole Marvin expressed frustration over the discontinuation of gluten-free options at her local Aldi, which had previously provided a range of affordable choices. This sentiment is echoed by others facing similar challenges, as some consumers revert to less safe dietary options due to costs.

Market research has indicated that the willingness to purchase gluten-free products declines among those in tighter financial situations. Affordability is a considerable barrier, with findings showing that gluten-free product launches are on the decline.

Retailers like Tesco maintain that they are committed to offering a broad selection of gluten-free products, with specific emphasis on keeping prices manageable for their customers. However, the overall trend suggests that many are feeling the strain from escalating prices and limited availability of gluten-free options.
