Study finds Vitamin D and calcium might not be as beneficial for bone health as previously believed – National

A recent study published by the British Medical Journal challenges the traditional view that calcium and vitamin D supplementation effectively prevents bone fractures and falls. This comprehensive review, covering data from 69 trials with over 153,900 participants, found minimal benefits of these supplements for individuals not at high risk of fractures.

Olivier Massé, a co-author of the study, noted that these findings align with a decade of evidence questioning the routine use of these supplements in adults. He emphasizes that there are valid reasons for taking vitamin D and calcium, especially for those on certain medications or with specific health conditions.

David Goltzman from McGill University added that those who are already vitamin D sufficient do not need additional supplements. However, he pointed out that many people are unaware of their vitamin D status due to a lack of routine testing. Seasonal variations also affect vitamin D levels, with less sun exposure in winter potentially leading to deficiencies.

Both researchers advocate for exploring alternative strategies for preventing fractures and falls, such as dietary changes and behavioral interventions, rather than relying solely on vitamin D and calcium supplements. They encourage maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise and a balanced diet rich in these nutrients.
