As more individuals seek assistance with legal matters, many are turning to artificial intelligence tools. These tools can help with tasks such as drafting divorce documents, contesting traffic citations, writing contracts, and even preparing court submissions.
AI applications are fast, often free, and readily accessible. However, legal experts caution that relying on artificial intelligence without the guidance of a licensed attorney carries significant risks.
“It seems convenient, but depending solely on AI is fraught with dangers, which could result in higher costs in the long run,” said attorney Giovanna Gallo, who specializes in family, immigration, and bankruptcy law.
According to Gallo, many individuals underestimate the possibility that AI-generated legal advice may be inaccurate, incomplete, or entirely incorrect. Errors resulting from AI could adversely affect a case or lead to expensive legal repercussions.
“When you depend on AI for self-representation, the outcomes might not be favorable,” Gallo explained. “What you believe is the correct defense might turn out to be exactly the opposite in court.”
The legal field is already encountering issues linked to AI usage. Attorneys nationwide have faced penalties after submitting AI-generated briefs that contained erroneous information and fabricated legal citations.
“AI is not always reliable, so that needs to be taken into account,” Gallo stated.
Due to these concerns, Gallo advises against using AI-generated legal documents without the scrutiny of a qualified attorney. Documents created solely by AI might not hold up in court or may even be deemed unenforceable.
Additionally, she warns that placing blind trust in AI over legal professionals can lead to further complications.
“If the opposing counsel indicates that the law states something different, and you insist that AI is accurate, that attitude can lead to sanctions,” Gallo added.
Privacy represents another significant issue. Unlike discussions with a licensed attorney, information shared with AI tools typically lacks the protection of attorney-client privilege. This means that personal information, legal strategies, or sensitive admissions inputted into an AI chatbot could potentially be compromised or used against someone in the future.
“A judge’s order is binding,” Gallo emphasized. “It’s not something you can simply disregard. There can be serious repercussions.”
While AI can serve as a valuable resource for research and organization, experts insist it should not replace licensed legal representation, particularly in critical matters involving immigration, divorce, criminal charges, or bankruptcy.
Some AI programs are specifically designed to support attorneys by assisting with document review and error detection. However, legal professionals assert that the technology is not yet advanced enough to fully substitute for seasoned lawyers.
For individuals worried about the costs of legal services, attorneys recommend exploring free or low-cost legal aid organizations rather than relying solely on AI-generated advice.
