NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Fish oil ranks among the most sought-after dietary supplements in the United States. Many adults incorporate it into their daily routines, hoping to reap heart-healthy benefits similar to those found in fish such as salmon.
However, recent testing by Consumer Reports has highlighted essential information consumers should be aware of before purchasing these supplements.
“Fish oil supplements are incredibly popular. According to a national survey conducted by Consumer Reports, they rank among the top five supplements in the country,” shared Catherine Roberts from Consumer Reports.
To uncover the true contents of these products, Consumer Reports evaluated 20 widely-used fish oil supplements.
The positive takeaway? None of the supplements raised significant safety concerns, including the presence of harmful contaminants like heavy metals or dioxins. Nonetheless, some issues were identified.
“We did discover a few products that showed signs of rancidity,” Roberts stated.
Additionally, some supplements contained lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids than indicated on their labels, implying that you may not receive the value you expected from your purchase.
In response to these findings, some supplement companies have raised questions. Qunol disputed the testing methods, Nature Made claimed its own products met safety standards, while California Gold Nutrition has paused sales of select items pending retesting. Costco has not provided comments regarding these issues.
This raises a broader question: do most individuals actually require fish oil supplements?
“When you solely rely on omega-3s from pills, the health benefits appear to be diminished,” Roberts explained. “There seems to be a key advantage to consuming whole foods.”
So, what is the best course of action?
Consumer Reports recommends a straightforward solution: enhance your diet by including more fish, such as salmon or sardines, a few times a week.
If you choose to take supplements, ensure they are stored correctly, as oils can deteriorate over time.
Research has explored omega-3 supplements for various health issues, including ADHD, asthma, and allergies. However, the current evidence remains inconclusive.
