The Importance of Staying Active: A Look at AARP’s Virtual Fitness Classes
As we age, maintaining physical health becomes increasingly important. Yet, finding the right kind of exercise that suits our needs can be challenging. This article explores a practical fitness program tailored for older adults and highlights the benefits of staying active, regardless of age.
Every Thursday morning in Baton Rouge, Carolyn Johnson sets up her laptop, chair, and dumbbells for her weekly workout—an event she never misses.
“Fitness has been a part of my life always, and as I grow older, staying fit is even more crucial,” she shares.
At 76, Johnson participates in AARP Louisiana’s “Turn Up Thursday,” a free virtual fitness class that takes place every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. CT. The 45-minute sessions combine simple cardio dance moves with strength and balance training, specifically designed for older adults. The class is streamed live via Zoom.
Frederick Griffith, a certified personal trainer based in New Orleans, conducts the class. Specializing in programs for older adults since 2018, he was motivated to help after his mother suffered a leg injury that required extensive rehabilitation. When her insurance no longer covered therapy, Griffith stepped in to assist her in building strength at home.
“Over six months, I watched my mother gain upper-body strength, enabling her to easily get in and out of vehicles,” he recalls.
He likens the human body to a car: “If you don’t start that car regularly, after a few weeks, the battery dies.” Regular physical activity, especially for older adults, not only maintains muscle and joint function but can also enhance overall quality of life.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscores the importance of regular activity, noting that it can significantly reduce the risk of various health issues, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and cognitive decline. Moreover, consistency in physical activity strengthens bones, improves balance, and helps sustain independence as we age.
Johnson appreciates the low-impact nature of the fitness class, as well as Griffith’s encouragement for participants to move at their own pace. “At my age, jumping around isn’t necessary,” she adds.
Despite the online format, Johnson feels a personal connection to the class and to Griffith. “I see him as my personal trainer. That’s why I make sure to join every week!” she exclaims.
If you’re looking for a way to integrate fitness into your routine, consider exploring options like AARP’s virtual classes. Engaging with a supportive community, whether online or in-person, can enhance motivation and make exercising a pleasant experience.
