200 Long Island Teens Recognized for Fitness and Character

Celebrating Young Leaders in Physical Education: Awards Recognize Outstanding Seniors

Fitness and physical education stand as foundational elements of a wholesome lifestyle, shaping not just physical health but also character development. Recently, over 200 exceptional high school seniors from Long Island were honored for their dedication and contributions to physical education in their respective schools. This recognition highlights the importance of fostering a culture of fitness and leadership among young people.

Recognition of Excellence in Physical Education

In Nassau County, a total of 102 students earned the 2025-26 Outstanding Physical Education Student Award, while 108 peers from Suffolk County received the 2026 High School Health & Physical Education Leadership Award. Both awards are presented by the New York Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Local schools were invited to nominate two graduating seniors based on a range of criteria, including academic performance and leadership in extracurricular activities.

Award recipients have proven themselves to be role models, demonstrating qualities such as strong citizenship, confidence, and good character. According to L. Zeelika Pieters-Klatsky, president of the Nassau Zone, “Physical education plays a vital role in shaping healthy, active lifestyles and building character. These individuals we honor have demonstrated excellence in physical education. We encourage our awardees to take this commitment to physical literacy long into adulthood.”
