PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – The Aroostook Agency on Aging has received a remarkable half-million-dollar donation aimed at enhancing exercise programs throughout Aroostook County.
This generous funding comes from the Rodney Smith Foundation, established by Mary Smith in memory of her late husband. According to agency leaders, this contribution will create significant opportunities for older adults in the area, enabling the organization to launch new initiatives and expand current programs that have already demonstrated success.
“This is likely the largest single contribution we’ve ever received as an agency. Typically, we receive less than $20,000 from federal sources to fund wellness programming. Many of our offerings are limited due to these financial constraints, so donations like this from community members are incredibly impactful,” stated Joy Barresi-Saucier, Executive Director of the Aroostook Agency on Aging.
“Thanks to these programs, many participants have regained mobility that they thought was lost. One participant told us that she can now stand up to put on her pants without risk of falling, a task she previously had to do sitting down,” shared Dawn Roberts, the agency’s Coordinator of Community Programs.
The agency also plans to collaborate with other organizations to broaden the availability of exercise programs throughout the county. Leaders are actively seeking ideas for new initiatives, and anyone with suggestions can reach out to the Aroostook Agency on Aging at 764-3396.
