UC’s BearcatGPT: A Spotlight on Local News and Its Private AI Platform

The University of Cincinnati has made headlines with the introduction of BearcatGPT, a private AI platform designed for use by students, faculty, and staff. This innovative tool is set to transform academic support and learning experiences across the university.

BearcatGPT was first introduced to faculty last year and became available to students in February. This unique platform enables UC users to develop a variety of tools that serve as study aids, tutoring resources, and digital assistants. Notably, it is the first privately developed AI platform by a university in Ohio and ranks among the early instances nationwide.

WLWT5 and Spectrum News One reported on the exciting new agents UC has created, including Bearcat Study Pal, Bearcat Test-Prepper, and Bearcat Genius, all aimed at enhancing the educational experience for students.

“It gives the UC community access to a suite of private AI tools that does not require sharing data in the public domain,“ remarked Bharath Prabhakaran, UC’s vice president and chief digital officer.

The University of Cincinnati is at the forefront of responsible and ethical AI development, boasting years of collaboration with organizations like the U.S. Department of Defense. Faculty members, including Aerospace Engineering Professor Kelly Cohen, are leading efforts to create explainable and transparent AI solutions that are transforming fields such as medicine, biosensors, aviation, and robotics. Revolutionary applications are being developed as a result.

“It is our responsibility to embrace the transformations that lie ahead in higher education,” stated Josette Riep, PhD, UC’s associate vice president of integrated data, engineering & application services. “We want to be catalysts for change and leaders in this field. Thanks to visionaries like Dr. Cohen, I believe we are achieving that.”

Riep emphasized that over two years of dedicated development have gone into ensuring that BearcatGPT remains both responsible and equitable. The platform guarantees that queries and content remain private, and feedback from UC’s AI enablement community plays a crucial role in its ongoing evolution, reinforcing governance and oversight.

“Community impact is paramount,” Riep affirmed. “Data in BearcatGPT remains strictly within UC’s environment. This is vital when considering intellectual property and contractual matters.”

With nearly 100 customized applications already available, UC faculty are continually innovating, developing new agents each month.
