Muggles Traveling Cafe inside Backroads Bakery
A pop-up serving coffee drinks and ‘magic potion’ dirty sodas is teaming up with a Lexington bakery known for its cheesecake.
Muggles Traveling Cafe is opening up inside Backroads Bakery Cheesecakes in the little yellow house at 109 W. Sixth St., behind Al’s Bar.
Muggles owner Christina King started the business in Cynthiana, then when she moved to Lexington she put it on hold for a bit.
King revived it first with pop-ups around Lexington before teaming up with Ruth Ralph, owner of Backroads Bakery.
Muggles Traveling Cafe have been popping up around town and now is going to join with Backroads Bakery on West Sixth Street.
“Christina and I have worked together in the past when I had Holy Crepe. When she decided to resurrect Muggles, I was overjoyed and saw the opportunity to expand drink options in shop, allowing her to have a brick-and-mortar location to build on,” Ralph said. “I mean, what is more magical than cold dirty sodas and cheesecake? The world certainly needs more joy these days.”
All the drinks, from the specialty coffees to the dirty sodas, which they call “magic potions,” have a magical theme of some sort, from wizards and witches to genies and time travelers (think of a certain blue police box).
Muggles Traveling Cafe makes specialty coffee drinks and “dirty sodas” that they call magic potions.
This summer, she’s adding two “Wicked” themed drinks: “Popular in Pink” and “Green Apple.”
And sugar-free options are available.
King said they are planning on a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 2 with lots of games and giveaways.

The bakery faces the side of the Levee Collective, an artists’ collective and gallery that focuses primarily on women and youth from minority populations. The collection has built a garden with seating.
Muggles plans to set up outside when the weather is pleasant, allowing customers to enjoy the shared green space of the courtyard, Ralph said.
