Anthropic recently announced it will cease to include usage of its AI model Claude on specific third-party platforms, such as OpenClaw, in standard subscriptions. This decision comes in response to a significant increase in demand for computing resources.
Changes to OpenClaw Integration
On Friday, Boris Cherny, the head of Claude Code, shared information through a series of posts on X, announcing that as of 12 p.m. PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer support usage through third-party applications, including OpenClaw.
“Beginning tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT, Claude subscriptions will not cover usage on third-party tools such as OpenClaw,” Cherny stated.
He further noted, “However, you can still use these tools with your Claude login by purchasing additional usage bundles or utilizing a Claude API key.”
Cherny explained that the adjustment is necessary due to the soaring demand for Claude, revealing that current subscription plans were not designed to accommodate the intense usage patterns seen with external tools.
“We’ve actively been addressing the growing demand for Claude, and our existing subscription structure isn’t suited for the usage patterns generated by these third-party applications,” he added.
He concluded, “We manage capacity judiciously and are prioritizing our customers who use our products and API.”
To assist with this transition, existing subscribers will receive a one-time credit equivalent to their monthly subscription cost and will be able to purchase discounted usage bundles.
Users can also request a refund through a link shared via email.
“We want to manage our growth intentionally to sustainably serve our customers in the long run,” Cherny remarked.
An Anthropic representative informed Business Insider that using Claude subscriptions with third-party applications violates the company’s terms of service and places undue stress on their systems.
