AAHS Cast and Crew Bring ‘The Secret Garden’ to Life

Embracing the Stage: Altoona Area High School’s Production of “The Secret Garden”

The excitement is palpable as Altoona Area High School gears up to present its latest musical, “The Secret Garden.” This enchanting production, featuring around 40 talented students, promises to tug at the heartstrings of its audience, blending emotion, artistry, and teamwork.

The Heart of the Musical

Set against the backdrop of early 1900s Yorkshire, “The Secret Garden,” reinterpreted by composer Lucy Simon and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman, tells a poignant story of grief, friendship, and healing. The plot centers on Mary Lennox, portrayed by freshman Lila Eamigh. After the loss of her parents, Mary moves to Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, who grapples with his own sorrow. Directed by Ben Cossitor, this year’s performance promises more depth, allowing students to delve into complex emotional roles.

The production, featuring an all-student pit orchestra, runs from April 9-11 at 7 PM in the high school auditorium. Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue prior to each performance.

A Collaborative Effort

Cossitor emphasizes the collaborative spirit among students, both on and offstage. With dedicated set, costume, and prop crews working tirelessly behind the scenes since November, each student plays a vital role in bringing the story to life. Senior Camille Krug, who also plays Martha, shared that this has been her most rewarding show yet, expressing deep satisfaction with both the storyline and her fellow cast members.

“The challenge of exploring these characters has pushed everyone to grow,” Cossitor explained. The emotional resonance of the story, combined with the cast’s commitment, creates a visually stunning and relatable performance.

The Experience Backstage

The backstage operations are equally impressive, with senior Attison Batten serving as student director. Battling complex logistics, he and a team of stage managers ensure that everything runs smoothly. The teamwork extends beyond the crew, with many actors actively engaged in backstage support.

“Every department contributes incredible talent and passion,” Batten noted, reflecting on the strong sense of community within the production.

Audience Impact

Cast members like Owen Carmel, who portrays Archibald, believe that audience members will find connections within the characters’ journeys. “I think everyone can relate in some way, and it will resonate deeply with them,” he remarked, tying personal experiences to the themes of loss and healing presented in the show.

Cossitor adds that the musical features beautiful, classic Broadway music, albeit with unique choreography integrated into the scene changes, enhancing the overall production.

Conclusion

Altoona Area High School’s presentation of “The Secret Garden” is not just a show; it’s a venture into emotional storytelling that showcases the dedication and artistry of its students. As they step into the spotlight, the cast and crew invite the community to join them for an unforgettable experience—one that celebrates resilience, healing, and the transformative power of friendship. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a remarkable performance blossoming on stage!
