In an exciting initiative to promote fitness and community engagement, the Student Government’s Campus Action Committee collaborated with Yoga Joint, a popular fitness studio chain in South Florida, to present the “March into Fitness” event. Open to all Florida Atlantic University (FAU) students, this event aimed to encourage movement while fostering a supportive environment.
On a sunny day in Boca Raton, participants gathered at the housing lawn of FAU for a group FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) pilates session. Led by enthusiastic instructors from Yoga Joint, the session utilized yoga mats, resistance bands, and offered refreshments, creating an inviting atmosphere. Additionally, the Red Bull DJ truck added to the vibrant setting by providing music and drinks for attendees and onlookers alike.
Angelina Bonis, the chair of the Campus Action Committee and a junior at FAU, played a pivotal role in organizing the event. Her vision for the “March into Fitness” initiative was to increase accessibility to fitness for students and promote not just physical well-being, but also mental health. “I hope students view these events as chances to get involved and foster a sense of community,” Bonis stated.
Students like sophomore Andrew Carter attended the event to unwind and stretch out their muscles. Carter noted that he was motivated to join by friends and fraternity brothers, highlighting the social aspect of fitness events.
As the session wrapped up, Boca House Secretary Enrique Toro-Mendez shared his positive experience, saying, “It’s always a good day when you get active.” He expressed hope that such events could help bring students together, echoing Carter’s feelings about feeling more connected to his community and peers.
This collaboration between the Student Government and Yoga Joint is just one of several initiatives at FAU designed to promote student health and fitness. Bonis mentioned other efforts, such as a free tennis racket rental program, encouraging students to utilize campus facilities like the tennis courts.
Bonis emphasized that the “March into Fitness” is not a one-off event. “This is our second such event, part of a larger initiative focused on ongoing student engagement and wellness. We hope to establish it as an annual tradition at FAU,” she remarked, underscoring the commitment to long-term fitness culture.
For anyone looking to enhance their fitness journey, participating in community events like this can be a fantastic way to motivate oneself and connect with others. Keep an eye out for similar opportunities to get moving, meet new people, and have fun while staying active.
