Celebrating Beauty and Strength: A Unique Photography Project for Women Over 50
In a world where conventional beauty standards often overshadow individuality, one Chicago photographer is leading a movement that celebrates women over 50. This Women’s History Month, Kambua Chema is launching a powerful portrait series that not only captures the essence of aging but also promotes self-acceptance and encouragement.
Chema’s initiative involves photographing 100 women aged 50 and above, without makeup or digital alterations. This approach emphasizes vulnerability, inviting participants to connect with their authentic selves. “Women often feel invisible as they age,” Chema explains. “This project allows them to share their experiences in a meaningful way.”
To date, 66 women have participated in this compelling series. Each was asked to complete the sentence: “I have earned every line because…” and the answers reveal the rich life stories behind those lines. For instance, participant Stephanie Johnson, who is approaching her 74th birthday, shared that her confidence is inspired by her grandmother, saying, “I think I’m beautiful, too. Even if no one else thinks I am, I know that I am.”
Stepping in front of the camera without the usual facade of makeup is no small feat for many of these women. Johnson recalls her initial hesitation, stating, “Being raw, oh my gosh, I said, I can’t wear lipstick! I always wear it when I walk out the door.” However, this act of shedding societal expectations becomes an empowering experience, challenging them to embrace their true selves.
Chema believes that every wrinkle and line represents a story—a testament to life experiences. She encourages participants to reflect on their journeys as a means of finding freedom. “There’s something beautiful about being authentically natural and just being you,” she notes.
Moreover, with age often comes clarity and a renewed sense of purpose. Johnson emphasizes the importance of living life on one’s own terms, saying, “Do what you want to do in your life. Time is too short.”
