Roland has ventured into the realm of generative AI with the launch of Melody Flip, a software application aimed at sparking innovative melodic ideas.
The term ‘generative AI’ often raises concerns among music creators, conjuring images of an influx of subpar content and tech executives who misinterpret the essence of creativity.
Nevertheless, Roland emphasizes that Melody Flip is crafted as a musician-friendly application, representing “Roland’s vision of technology as a partner that coexists with the creative process.”

Melody Flip serves as a tool that analyzes existing audio, offering insights into its various musical attributes while generating a wide range of musical ‘options’ to enhance and expand the original material.
According to Roland, “In recent years, AI and other emerging technologies have advanced significantly in music production. Roland believes these tools should not replace the artist but rather amplify their capabilities, promoting a workflow where human intent, taste, and creativity remain central, with technology acting as a collaborator or co-creator.”

Developed using technology sourced from Sony’s Computer Science Laboratories’ research into AI-assisted music, Melody Flip enables users to upload audio files for analysis. The software evaluates the ‘musical DNA’ of the audio, examining elements such as key, BPM, structure, mood, genre, and chord progression.
Using this assessment, it suggests melodic ideas, drawing from a “curated library of approximately 300 creative palettes (predefined musical styles and tonal directions),” as detailed by Roland.
Users have the flexibility to edit and refine these suggestions, effectively treating the technology as an active collaborator.
In addition to generating melodies, Melody Flip can create chord progressions, bass lines, and drum parts, allowing for both audio and MIDI export for use in other projects.

Melody Flip is accessible on both Mac and PC, functioning as a plugin that integrates seamlessly with your preferred Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
“Roland has consistently been dedicated to fostering the evolution of music culture through electronic instruments and production tools,” states CEO and Representative Director Masahiro Minowa.
“Melody Flip symbolizes a notable advancement in responsibly developed AI, heralding a future where technology and humanity collaborate to enhance creativity. As we progress, Roland will persist in pushing the boundaries of musical expression with groundbreaking products and services that elevate creators’ instincts and combine human sensitivity with the full potential of technology.”
Similar to other offerings from Roland, Melody Flip will be available on Roland Cloud. While pricing details are yet to be announced, a free trial is set to launch in May.
