13 Simple Ways to Improve Your Mood
Staying cheerful can sometimes feel like a challenge. Having experienced depression before, I often find myself monitoring my thoughts and emotions to stay balanced.
Practicing self-love has truly changed my life, showing me that it’s perfectly fine to pursue what makes me happy. During this season, many of us experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which can lead to mood swings and fatigue. That’s why I want to share some easy strategies to elevate your spirits instantly. If you have your own tips, I’d love to hear them!
JUMP ON YOUR BED
It may sound silly, but remember how much fun it was to jump on your bed as a child? Whenever I’m feeling low, I leap on my bed until laughter takes over. It’s an instant mood booster.
BURN YOUR FAVORITE SCENTED CANDLE
One of my favorite ways to uplift my mood is to light a beloved candle. Scents like black bamboo and eucalyptus fill the air and instantly calm me.
AWAKEN YOUR SENSES
In the past, I dealt with anxiety by keeping myself busy, but now I focus on slowing down. I find that this approach works wonders. I open a window for fresh air, listen to uplifting music, take deep breaths, or meditate for a few minutes.
SNACK ON SOMETHING HEALTHY
When feeling down, you might either lose your appetite or crave unhealthy foods. I sometimes struggle with this, but it’s essential to maintain regular meals, even if they are small snacks. Eating helps counter crankiness and fatigue. On tough days, I enjoy berries, almonds, and a bit of dark chocolate. Incorporating Omega-3 rich foods can also help enhance mood and reduce depression.

GET ACTIVE
Engaging in physical activity produces endorphins. Regular exercise alleviates stress, improves sleep, boosts self-esteem, and increases your energy. Even a brief 10-minute walk outside can elevate your mood significantly.
PRACTICE SELF-LOVE
As children, we often dreamed of growing up, but we sometimes overlook the joys of adulthood. Life can be challenging with responsibilities like bills and work, but it also offers pleasures. I can visit my favorite coffee shop, indulge in a tasty vegetarian wrap, or treat myself to something new—without guilt. While I don’t often take breaks from my busy life, when stress builds, I love to spend a cozy afternoon unplugging and focusing on me.
DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE
There’s no better feeling than brightening someone’s day.
READ
Have you heard of bibliotherapy? It involves using selected reading materials as therapeutic aids. Reading novels has been shown to alleviate anxiety and its effects can be enduring, so grab a good book when you’re feeling down.
PLAY WITH YOUR PET
Spending time with my dog instantly lifts my spirits. He seems to sense when I’m anxious, and his happy demeanor always brings a smile to my face.
TAKE A NAP
Sometimes, all you really need is a nap. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or spearmint tea, cozy up in a blanket, and take a well-deserved rest.
CUDDLE
Who doesn’t love to cuddle? Whether it’s with a partner, a child, or a pet, hugs can significantly enhance your mood.
LISTEN TO AN AUDIOBOOK
Listening to a great audiobook is another of my favorite ways to unwind. On those days when you want to read but can barely keep your eyes open, an audiobook is the perfect solution.
TAKE A SHOWER
It may sound odd, but taking a long, warm shower is surprisingly effective for me. I wash my hair, throw on my coziest clothes, and sometimes warm my clothes and towel in the dryer for a few minutes to create the ultimate cozy experience after showering.
