Artificial intelligence has long been anticipated as a means to simplify work and lessen employee burdens. However, recent findings indicate that this may not be the case in numerous workplaces.
A study conducted by workforce analytics firm ActivTrak reveals that AI tools are intensifying work for employees instead of alleviating their workloads. The research scrutinized the digital activities of approximately 164,000 employees, uncovering a noteworthy shift in work dynamics.
According to the findings, employees are allocating more time to emails and messaging platforms, while their engagement in focused tasks, such as problem-solving, has decreased by about 9%.
Experts attribute this trend to the fact that any time saved by AI tools is rapidly being filled with additional work responsibilities.
Gabriela Mauch, an executive at ActivTrak, stated that the increased capacity resulting from AI does not guarantee a reduction in work volume.
“What typically happens is that the capacity AI frees up immediately gets repurposed into doing other work,” she explained.
As businesses swiftly integrate AI-driven tools for productivity, communication, and automation, employees often find themselves taking on more tasks rather than fewer.
The ActivTrak study is among the most extensive investigations to date, examining how artificial intelligence is transforming daily work habits.
The results imply that, while AI enhances efficiency, it might also be altering the essence of work—making employees busier in different ways instead of decreasing their workload.
