Experts highlight that when you drink water can significantly affect its health benefits. Dr. Anshul Singh, the lead for Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Artemis Hospitals, emphasizes the importance of starting your day with water. “Drinking water first thing in the morning is incredibly beneficial,” he explains. “After hours of sleep, the body becomes slightly dehydrated. Consuming a glass of water upon waking helps to rehydrate, kick-start internal organ function, boost metabolism, and eliminate toxins.” He also notes that drinking water 20 to 30 minutes prior to meals helps prepare the digestive system and can even assist in controlling appetite by making you feel fuller.

“It’s important to drink water throughout the day, especially when you feel fatigued or have difficulty concentrating. Mild dehydration can lead to tiredness, headaches, and impaired focus,” Dr. Singh advises. “Staying adequately hydrated can help maintain your energy levels and keep your mind sharp. Sipping a bit of water before bedtime can also help you stay hydrated throughout the night. Ultimately, the best approach is to drink regularly throughout the day to support your health and bodily functions,” he added.

Functional Nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO and Founder of iThrive, adds that “Hydration is often discussed in terms of quantity, but the timing is equally critical. The body operates on biological rhythms, and hydration is most effective when it supports these rhythms. One optimal moment to drink water is right after waking up. After a night of sleep, the body is naturally dehydrated; a glass of water in the morning awakens the digestive system, supports circulation, and initiates detoxification.”

Pradhan also highlights the importance of hydrating roughly 30 minutes before meals to enhance digestive secretions, aiding the stomach in efficiently breaking down food. However, she warns against drinking too much water during meals, as this can dilute digestive enzymes and stomach acids, potentially leading to feelings of bloating. “Sipping water between meals, particularly in the afternoon when energy tends to dip, can help maintain hydration and prevent confusion between thirst and hunger, which often leads to unnecessary snacking,” she notes. “It’s crucial to avoid consuming large quantities of water right before bed, as this can interrupt sleep due to increased nighttime awakenings,” she warns.
