Microsoft Launches AI Tool for Analyzing Medical Records

Microsoft is expanding its influence in the healthcare realm with the introduction of its new offering, Copilot Health.

This service functions as a specialized segment of the company’s Copilot artificial intelligence tool, designed to synthesize user information and provide tailored health insights, as outlined in a press release dated Thursday (March 12).

According to the release, “Copilot Health does not replace your doctor. Instead, it enhances the time you spend with them, equipping you with the right questions, context, and confidence that stems from a deeper understanding of your own health.”

The tool integrates users’ health records, wearable data, and medical histories into one consolidated platform. It then utilizes AI to weave these elements into a “coherent narrative,” assisting users in seeing connections between various health factors.

“This is where the link between your disrupted sleep patterns and their underlying causes becomes apparent,” the release explained. “It redirects you from mindlessly searching symptoms in the dead of night to engaging in informed dialogues.”

Copilot Health will be launched in a “carefully orchestrated progression,” with a waitlist for the tool set to open on Thursday, as stated in the release.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, emphasized that the health data integrated into this feature will be encrypted and separated from the rest of the application. This decision addresses privacy concerns surrounding the sharing of medical records with generative AI platforms, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

Suleyman noted, “Microsoft holds a unique position to undertake this initiative, given our scale, regulatory experience, and the trust people have in our security as a seasoned, stable player in the technology landscape.”

A report by PYMNTS Intelligence titled “How AI Becomes the Place Consumers Start Everything” found that consumers are increasingly comfortable utilizing AI tools for healthcare information.

AI is increasingly viewed as a first step in healthcare rather than just a supplementary tool. Frequent users of AI report starting their tasks “within AI platforms instead of relying on search engines or apps,” a trend that encompasses various areas, including health-related inquiries, PYMNTS reported on January 6.

This shift in behavior aligns with findings from OpenAI, which revealed that 55% of Americans utilize the company’s ChatGPT to comprehend symptoms, 48% for decoding medical jargon, and 44% for exploring treatment alternatives.

“These are critical preliminary steps in the healthcare journey, significantly influencing how patients prepare for consultations and determine when to pursue professional care,” PYMNTS noted.
