New Maternal and Infant Supplements Focus on Gut Health and Development

Recent developments in nutrition have led to formulations that cater specifically to the needs of women before conception, during pregnancy, and even in the postpartum phase, extending to early childhood development. This evolution highlights the postpartum period as a crucial “fourth trimester,” where focused nutrition is essential for restoring maternal nutrients while benefiting the infant’s health.

New products and extended lines are being created with precise physiological outcomes in mind, addressing everything from fetal brain and bone development to maternal recovery, vaginal health, immune function, and early digestive maturation. To aid compliance, brands are also innovating delivery methods to ensure convenience and usability for consumers dealing with nausea, pill fatigue, low energy, and busy schedules.

A growing focus on gut health and the microbiome underpins much of this product development, with an increased emphasis on incorporating probiotics, prebiotics, and human milk oligosaccharides to bolster resilience both for maternal recovery and infant growth.

Below, we explore some of the latest products aimed at mothers—and also fathers—and their children.

O Positiv Health’s PREGGO Prenatal + Probiotic

O Positiv has introduced its PREGGO Prenatal + Probiotic, designed to promote fetal development and maternal wellness from preconception through postpartum.

This daily supplement features essential nutrients such as methylfolate, choline, omegas, and iron to aid in the development of the baby’s brain and bones, alongside probiotics that contribute to gut and vaginal microbiome balance and maintain bowel regularity. Ginger and vitamin B6 are also included to help alleviate occasional morning sickness and nausea.

“I recommend these nutrients to every expecting mom—omegas, folate, and probiotics support the baby’s development, enhance the mother’s microbiome, and ease common pregnancy symptoms like nausea and constipation,” remarked Dr. Kendra Segura, OBGYN, MD, MPH, FACOG, a member of O Positiv’s Medical Advisory Board.

“What excites me about PREGGO Prenatal + Probiotic is how it fills the gap between what most prenatals offer and what pregnant individuals genuinely require. It’s comprehensive, science-based, and tailored to real pregnancy experiences.”

Mengniu and Advanced Infant Formula

In February, dairy leader Mengniu announced significant strides in its infant formula range. With the green light for the human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) 3′-SL in China, the company has established a systematic array of three crucial HMO molecules, including 2′-FL and LNnT.

This initiative is a part of a broader move into functional dairy. Mengniu’s formula brand, Reeborne, recently launched “Reeborne Affinity,” leveraging maternal MLCT technology to enhance fat metabolism and nutrient absorption, reportedly doubling absorption rates and boosting DHA content by 48%.

Ritual’s Natalbiotic

Ritual has launched Natalbiotic, a supplement targeted at enhancing both digestive and vaginal health in mothers while boosting immune health in their babies. This biotic set features L. rhamnosus HN001 and B. lactic HN019 from Fonterra, PreforPro from Deerland, and the UREX probiotic blend from Christian Hansen (L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. reuteri RC-14).

Ingredients are delivered in micro tablets that utilize nested inner capsule technology, ensuring the integrity of prebiotics and probiotics is maintained while also enhancing absorption and efficiency.

This product was unveiled in October, coinciding with Ritual’s wider retail expansion planned for 2025 at Walmart and Ulta.

Bayer Enters Prenatal Nutrition

Bayer’s Consumer Health Division made its debut in the prenatal nutrition space in India through its multivitamin brand by launching Supradyn Mom’s, which includes essential nutrients such as iron, folic acid, vitamin B6, B12, copper, and zinc, alongside Supradyn Naturals Calcium+ (calcium, vitamin D2, and magnesium).

Launched during National Nutrition Week in September 2025, this product range aims to address significant nutritional deficiencies encountered by women during preconception, pregnancy, and lactation.

“India is at a crucial point in its development journey,” remarked Sandeep Verma, cluster head of South Asia at Bayer Consumer Health. “Assuring the health of mothers and future generations is vital for our nation’s progress. Bayer’s new prenatal range underscores its commitment to providing affordable, scientifically validated solutions that empower women to take charge of their health and offer their children the best start in life.”

The products are available through chemist shops, online pharmacies, and in Tier 1 and 2 cities across the country.

Additionally, Bayer unveiled a €5 million investment to upgrade its Cimanggis site in Indonesia to produce Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) under the Elevit brand. These tablets align with UN and WHO guidelines and contain 15 essential vitamins and minerals aimed at minimizing stunting and supporting pregnant women in emerging markets.

Needed’s Prenatal Multi Essentials

Needed has unveiled a new Prenatal Multi Essential, claiming to offer eight times more nutrition compared to leading brands, delivered through a daily dose of three capsules that includes 22 essential ingredients.

Key ingredients include folate as Optifolin+ (Methylfolate + Choline) for neural tube formation and healthy methylation, 200 mg of VitaCholine for brain and nervous system development, 150 mcg of active B12 (in two forms) for energy metabolism, 40 mg of active B6 to counteract pregnancy nausea and support fetal development, and 100 mcg of vitamin D3 for immune health in both mother and child. Additional components consist of vitamins A, C, E, B2, B3, K2, biotin, pantothenic acid, iodine, Albion magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and chromium.

The brand emphasizes that its advanced formulation is grounded in clinical data, rather than the outdated Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) that have guided prenatal nutrition for over eight decades.

Munchkin’s Infant Formula

Baby lifestyle brand Munchkin has entered the U.S. market with a formula that incorporates beta-palmitate to mimic mature breast milk. This formula is enriched with essential prebiotics, proteins, and nutrients, all aimed at supporting immune development, brain growth, and digestive health.

“Venturing into infant formula is a significant milestone for our company, and a natural extension of our mission to assist parents through every stage of early life,” said Steven Dunn, founder and CEO of Munchkin’s parent company, WHY Brands Inc., following the launch in February.

“Munchkin Infant Formula epitomizes years of engagement with families, combined with insights from doctors and scientists, resulting in a product that stands out—being the only cow’s milk formula in the U.S. containing beta-palmitate, a fat commonly found in mature breast milk to enhance digestion and nutrient absorption.”

The ingredients in the formula include alpha-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, beta-palmitate, lutein, DHA (hexane-free), ARA, nucleotides, taurine, L-carnitine, and beta-carotene.

Tiny Health’s Gut Maturation Index

Tiny Health has launched the Gut Maturation Index, an innovative machine learning tool that predicts a child’s gut microbiome age with a one-to-two-month accuracy up to age three. This tool empowers parents to compare their child’s gut health against age-specific benchmarks and take action if gut development is lagging or accelerating—conditions potentially linked to chronic issues like eczema, allergies, obesity, and Type 1 diabetes.

“Being able to forecast a child’s microbiome age and align it with their chronological age is a revolutionary step forward,” stated Cheryl Sew Hoy, CEO of Tiny Health, following the launch. “This innovation provides a novel means to support gut development during a crucial time in a child’s life.”

The index uses metrics such as microbial diversity, beneficial bacteria, and bacterial gene profiles, supported by Tiny Health’s extensive database of microbial samples from infants. Families receive a personalized action plan to help correct imbalances and optimize gut health during vital developmental periods.

WeNatal, a brand specializing in fertility and prenatal supplements, has introduced Protein+ for both mothers and fathers-to-be. This product is available in two specialized formulations: one blending a comprehensive prenatal multivitamin with grass-fed whey protein and collagen for mothers, and the other tailored for men and combining a preconception multivitamin with grass-fed whey protein and collagen.

The brand highlights that this launch addresses a significant gap in traditional prenatal vitamins regarding necessary macronutrients, such as protein and collagen, essential for metabolic health, tissue repair, and hormone regulation.

“Wellness should not be complicated,” shared Dr. Demeri, ND, IFMCP, WeNatal’s medical advisor. “We created WeNatal Protein+ to simplify daily nutrition by combining essential nutrients, protein, and collagen in one scoop, making it easier for women and men to stay consistent and reap the benefits.”
