In a significant revelation, the United States military has publicly acknowledged the deployment of a range of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools in its ongoing conflict with Iran. This statement comes amid investigations into a severe military blunder involving the bombing of an elementary school, which has raised serious questions about decision-making processes in warfare.
Admiral Brad Cooper, the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), made this admission in a video message, providing insights into the military’s innovative strategies. He emphasized that these AI technologies are instrumental in helping “warfighters” navigate the increasingly complex landscape of modern combat.
“Our warfighters are leveraging a variety of advanced AI tools. These systems help us sift through vast amounts of data in seconds, allowing our leaders to cut through the noise and make smarter decisions more rapidly than the enemy can react,” Cooper explained.
He reassured viewers that, despite the speed of AI technology, “Humans will always make final decisions on what to shoot and what not to shoot.”
The Minab Targeting Fiasco
However, Cooper’s assurances come under scrutiny following reports from The New York Times. A preliminary investigation into the tragic missile strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab on February 28 reveals it to be a “targeting fiasco.” This incident resulted in the loss of 175 lives, including 150 schoolgirls and staff members.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that CENTCOM officers used outdated intelligence from the Defence Intelligence Agency to generate the strike coordinates. Notably, the school—evident by its bright blue and pink paint and visible sports fields—had been clearly marked as separate from an adjacent military base since 2016. Unfortunately, it remained categorized as an active target in military databases.
