Why Does B12 Make Some People Sleepy?

Vitamin B12 supplements are frequently suggested for individuals feeling persistently fatigued or low on energy. This essential nutrient plays a vital role in forming red blood cells, supporting nerve function, and producing energy in the body. However, some may experience sleepiness after taking these supplements. Is this a common occurrence? Let’s explore this further.

Dr. RR Dutta, Head of Internal Medicine at Paras Health in Gurugram, clarifies that vitamin B12 is typically not linked to drowsiness; instead, it is associated with boosting energy levels.

“Primarily derived from animal products, B12 is crucial for red blood cell creation, maintaining nervous system health, DNA synthesis, and supporting energy production,” continues Dr. Dutta. He stresses that individuals experiencing unintended fatigue after taking supplements should consider other potential causes.

“Those feeling unusual tiredness or fatigue post-supplementation should evaluate factors like sleep quality, underlying health issues, or their dietary habits,” notes Dr. Dutta.

Reasons for Possible Sleepiness After Taking B12

In some cases, feeling sleepy after taking the supplement may stem from other health issues rather than the vitamin itself. “This reaction is not common and may be linked to underlying medical conditions, such as anemia, thyroid dysfunction, dehydration, or elevated cortisol levels (the stress hormone),” explains Dr. Dutta.

He highlights that individuals may begin vitamin B12 supplementation while already experiencing fatigue or excessive tiredness due to an undiagnosed medical concern, which can create the impression that the supplement is responsible for their symptoms.

Furthermore, Dr. Dutta mentions that the body might need time to adjust when starting supplementation, especially for those previously deficient. “The body may signal a rebalancing of metabolic processes, resulting in sleepiness,” he adds.

In rare instances, “additives in the supplement or interactions with other medications” could also lead to these atypical symptoms. “If persistent sleepiness occurs after taking vitamin B12, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional to evaluate vitamin levels and rule out any other health issues,” he advises.

Fatigue as an Indicator of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Interestingly, excessive fatigue is often one of the first symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.

“The initial symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue, excessive sleep, and constant tiredness. If not addressed, these can progress to more severe signs such as pale skin, shortness of breath, impaired concentration, severe headaches, dizziness, and even memory problems,” warns Dr. Dutta.

This is primarily due to the critical role vitamin B12 plays in producing healthy red blood cells that transport oxygen throughout the body. “When B12 levels drop, oxygen delivery to tissues declines, which can lead to weakness, lethargy, and in some cases, extreme sleepiness,” he explains.

In certain instances, individuals might even experience tingling or numbness in their extremities due to compromised nervous system function. “A sustained deficiency in vitamin B12 could also lead to mood changes, including abrupt irritability or mild depression,” Dr. Dutta cautions.
