Durham’s AI Tools Transforming Hospital Care

Innovative Life-Saving Technology Developed at Durham University

The Computer Science department at Durham University has developed groundbreaking AI technology aimed at helping healthcare professionals identify critically ill patients more quickly.

This innovative tool, detailed in a paper published in BMJ Health and Care Informatics, has the potential to save lives by facilitating prompt medical intervention.

Additionally, the AI solutions are designed to improve communication between healthcare facilities and patients who are being discharged.

This technology is a collaborative effort between Durham University, The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, and the University of Greater Manchester, with valuable support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Medical Research Council (MRC).

Furthermore, the project received the Best Presentation Award at the Society for Acute Medicine’s International Conference, and was featured in an NIHR policy briefing presented to the Department of Health and Social Care.

Traditionally, hospitals have relied on the NEWS2 system, which utilizes limited data assessed by healthcare professionals. However, the advancement of electronic health records allows the newly developed AI tool, spearheaded by Professor Noura Al Moubayed and Dr. Matthew Watson, to review a patient’s comprehensive health history. This enables it to generate a more accurate and personalized risk score, thereby allowing hospital staff to swiftly identify patients who are at high risk of deteriorating.

This AI model has been validated through testing on over 170,000 admissions at Salford Royal Hospital, demonstrating significantly superior performance when compared to traditional NEWS2 systems. As noted in a report for Durham University’s news page, the tool accurately identified 92 percent of patients whose conditions worsened, a considerable improvement over the 13 percent accuracy of NEWS2.
