3 Key Factors to Consider Before Replacing Your Personal Trainer with AI

Imagine having a personal trainer in your pocket, ready to assist you around the clock. With artificial intelligence (AI), this possibility is increasingly becoming a reality. However, the pressing question remains: can AI truly serve as an effective personal trainer tailored specifically for you?

The idea is captivating, particularly since AI can utilize predictive algorithms based on the data you provide to customize your workouts according to your fitness level. According to sports scientist and competitive bodybuilder Mike Israetel, “In a few years, AI will not only design but also modify and adapt your workouts to meet your needs.” He shared these insights during a recent episode of the Strong Talk podcast.

However, while Israetel sees potential in AI for the fitness industry, he also emphasizes that it’s not quite ready to cater to everyone’s fitness needs at this moment. In his conversation with MH US fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S, he identified three key limitations of current AI technology in workout planning, alongside two effective ways to utilize it right now.

One significant limitation is that AI lacks a human understanding of physical responses. While a workout may seem technically sound on paper, AI cannot gauge real-world factors like daily fatigue or motivation. A human trainer can observe and adapt workouts based on these subtle cues, something an AI can only do if prompted.

Another limitation arises from AI’s reliance on language over experiential learning. Currently, AI’s understanding of movement mechanics is not as developed as it could be. Israetel notes that AI isn’t extensively trained on video content, which could help it grasp biomechanics better.

For instance, when someone squats, a human trainer can predict subsequent movements based on the body’s angles and positions. In contrast, AI’s comprehension remains primarily theoretical and linguistic, like a bookish enthusiast who’s researched extensively but has never stepped foot in a gym.

Lastly, AI has a “context window” limitation. Its memory isn’t continuous; during prolonged interactions, AI might forget previous workouts or goals you’ve set, like a trainer overlooking your focus on lower body training that week. Finding a well-organized, attentive human coach can mitigate this issue.

If you choose to incorporate AI into your fitness journey, Israetel suggests two practical approaches. First, use AI to generate sample workout ideas without feeling bound to adhere to an entire program. Be cautious, as the suggestions might sometimes seem unusual. The second approach is to treat AI as a training assistant, utilizing it to address common queries, such as the effectiveness of different training techniques. However, it’s essential to verify the information you receive to avoid misinformation.

For beginners, using AI to ask questions can enhance your understanding of fitness fundamentals. Conversely, experienced individuals may navigate conversations with AI more effectively, helping to pinpoint inaccuracies and ensure workouts are safe and effective.

Conclusion: In summary, while AI technology holds promise for the fitness world, it currently has limitations that impact its effectiveness as a personal trainer. By understanding these constraints and employing AI wisely—either as a source of workout inspiration or a fitness assistant—you can enhance your training experience. It’s essential, however, to continue learning and consider supplementing AI with guidance from human trainers for a more tailored approach to your fitness journey.
