Embracing Self-Expression Through Nail Art: The Journey of a Young Entrepreneur

In the vibrant world of personal grooming, nails often take a back seat. However, for Kimberly Ng (N ’29), nails have transformed into a canvas of creativity and self-expression. A Penn student with a passion for nail art, Kimberly turned a hobby into a budding business during the pandemic. Here’s an inside look at her journey and the practical aspects of running a small beauty business while balancing academic life.

Turning Passion into Business

Kimberly started her venture, “Kimberly Does Nails,” during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to cope with boredom. Initially, it was a solo activity, but after doing her friends’ nails at Penn, her skills gained attention, leading to a flourishing business. “I honestly didn’t think it was going to turn into a business,” she reflects, noting the organic growth driven by referrals.

Affordable Pricing Structure

When Kimberly began, she focused on friends and didn’t charge for her services. As her clientele grew, she introduced a pricing structure that remains budget-friendly compared to local salons. Basic services start at $20 for simple nail colors, with small additional charges for charms and more complex designs. For example, a set featuring multiple colors and intricate patterns ranges from $25 to $30. “I still see it as a side hobby,” she says, emphasizing the fun aspect over profit.

Booking Made Easy

Clients typically reach out to Kimberly through Instagram. She transitioned from a personal account to a professional one to streamline scheduling. Currently, she uses a tool called Calendly to manage her time better, limiting appointments to weekends and juggling her academic commitments effectively. “It’s pretty easy to book an appointment with me,” she assures potential clients, reflecting her dedication to maintaining a balance between studies and her nail art passion.

Time Management Skills

The amount of time a nail set takes varies based on complexity; typically, it ranges from one to two and a half hours. Kimberly adeptly manages her schedule, prioritizing studies, especially during busy academic periods like midterms. “I’ve learned to make time,” she explains, having honed her time management skills through years of balancing extracurricular activities with schoolwork.

First Experiences and Growth

Kimberly’s first client at Penn was her roommate, whom she had just met. This initial experience led to expanding her client base after sharing her work on Instagram. Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through as she likens her nail business to her previous passion for baking and cooking—hobbies that transitioned into jobs.

The Joy of Nail Art

For Kimberly, nails are more than just beauty statements; they symbolize a form of self-expression. “Other types of style are temporary, but nails have a sense of permanence,” she notes, celebrating how well-maintained nails can uplift one’s mood. Compliments and admiration from others serve as additional motivation in her artistic journey.

Final Thoughts

Nail artistry is more than just a trend for Kimberly—it’s a meaningful outlet for self-expression. As she continues to evolve her business while managing academic responsibilities, Kimberly demonstrates that pursuing your passion can lead to happiness and fulfillment. For anyone interested in aesthetic creativity, her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to turn a hobby into something beautiful.
