AI Usage in Daily Work Will Determine Promotions, Says Accenture to Senior Staff

Accenture’s AI-Driven Promotion Strategy

In an effort to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its culture, Accenture is linking employee promotions to the utilization of AI technologies. Recent communications to associate directors and senior managers emphasized that advancing to leadership positions will necessitate a “regular adoption” of AI tools. Essentially, a lack of AI engagement could hinder prospects for promotion.

This initiative aligns with Accenture’s strategic pivot toward an AI-focused future, similar to the directions taken by tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta. During the India AI Impact Summit, CEO Julie Sweet remarked on the imperative for companies to reinvent their operations and adapt their workforces to thrive in an AI-driven landscape.

In its push towards integration, Accenture has already made the difficult decision to lay off 11,000 employees who were deemed unlikely to adapt to new AI roles, having spent $2 billion on severance over the past three years.

Looking forward, the company aims to actively monitor employee engagement with its internal AI platforms, such as AI Refinery, which is developed in collaboration with NVIDIA. By analyzing log-ins and overall activity, Accenture will be able to identify employees who are effectively utilizing AI in their work.

It is important to note that not all employees will be subjected to this requirement. Staff members in 12 European nations, along with those working on US government contracts, will be exempt due to various local regulations. There is also uncertainty regarding whether entry-level positions will eventually be included in this criteria.

Accenture’s approach reflects a broader trend in the industry. Back in June 2025, Microsoft communicated to its workforce that “using AI is no longer optional.” Managers were instructed to incorporate AI usage into performance evaluations, while CEO Satya Nadella candidly warned executives that their support for the company’s AI strategies was crucial for their continued tenure.

Clearly, embracing AI has become a vital criterion for career advancement.
