RUSKIN, Fla., February 19, 2026—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Earl J. Lennard High School celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated weight room, a project made possible through a collaboration with Wellpoint and the Impact Fitness Foundation. This update provides a modern space that will benefit over 800 student-athletes and is the first major update to the facility in nearly 20 years.
The renovation illustrates a commitment to providing young people with better access to fitness resources, helping them cultivate healthy habits at an early age. Schools often serve as the primary locations for structured fitness, where students can participate safely. Notably, research indicates that the exercise habits formed during adolescence tend to persist into adulthood. However, fewer than 25% of high school students achieve the recommended levels of daily activity, emphasizing the need for accessible fitness options within educational institutions.
In just two days, around 50 volunteers worked diligently to transform the space, adding turf flooring, assembling new equipment, and introducing effective storage solutions. The transformation culminated in a ribbon-cutting celebration attended by school leaders and community supporters.
“This new weight room represents far more than upgraded equipment,” said Richard Peacock, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Lennard High School. “It’s a space our 2,500 students can take pride in—a place where they can develop healthy habits, build confidence, and support their growth on and off the field.”
To mark the occasion, coaches, teachers, and student leaders participated in a fitness clinic hosted by the Impact Fitness Foundation to familiarize themselves with the new facility. The school also received a comprehensive fitness curriculum, ensuring continuous instruction and athlete development.
“Wellpoint is dedicated to advancing overall wellness by investing in communities where individuals live, learn, and play,” stated Dr. Marc Kaprow, D.O., Chief Medical Director at Simply Healthcare Plans. “Through initiatives like this, we aim to enhance access to essential tools and opportunities that help students develop healthy habits and ultimately strengthen communities.”
Chris Welsh, Founder and President of the Impact Fitness Foundation, added: “High school is a vital stage for establishing positive relationships with fitness and movement. Our mission is to create environments that motivate, inspire, and empower students. This project showcases the impactful outcomes possible when schools, nonprofits, and corporate partners collaborate for the benefit of young people.”
Conclusion
As demonstrated by the transformation of the weight room at Lennard High School, fostering a culture of fitness requires community effort and investment. Whether you’re a student, parent, or community member, encouraging active engagement in physical fitness can create lasting benefits for individuals and the broader community. Together, we can inspire the next generation to prioritize their health and well-being.
