13 Insights on Essential Oils

Essential oils have become my go-to solution for relaxation and unwinding. Over the past few months, I’ve shared many experiences with these oils, and it’s time to delve into why they have become an essential part of my life.

Imagine diffusing soothing lavender oil while using the Calm app—who wouldn’t adore that combination? There’s an undeniable tranquility that accompanies meditating alongside your favorite essential oils. As an ardent fan of aromatherapy, I’ve discovered that since I started using essential oils, it has become significantly easier to relax at bedtime or de-stress after a busy day.

For the longest time, I was hesitant to embrace meditation. Anyone who experiences anxiety can relate—the struggle of confronting your thoughts alone can be daunting. Initially, meditation felt uncomfortable, but it has since evolved into an indispensable practice for me, just like my cherished essential oils.

So, what are essential oils exactly? They are concentrated liquids typically extracted from various parts of plants—leaves, stems, flowers, bark, and roots—often through distillation via steam or water. While they are called “oils,” they aren’t greasy; instead, they offer numerous therapeutic benefits, including acting as natural antidepressants and having antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.

WHY I LOVE THEM

The versatility of essential oils is astounding! There are countless ways to utilize them—from DIY beauty recipes to alleviating migraines and allergies. They can even be used to create non-toxic cleaning supplies. My preference lies in aromatherapy, usually using them in my diffuser. However, I also appreciate direct and steam inhalation.

I predominantly use essential oils for stress relief and winding down at bedtime or during meditation, but I also enjoy diffusing them while working to enhance focus and alleviate seasonal allergies. One feature I appreciate about essential oils is their ability to cultivate scent associations in my brain. Being particularly sensitive to fragrances, I associate specific scents with vivid memories. For instance, the aroma of lavender oil signifies that it’s time to unwind, while the smell of peppermint sharpens my focus, as I typically diffuse it while working at my desk.

MY FAVORITES

Lavender oil ranks among the most popular and adaptable essential oils, making it a fantastic starting point for beginners. I use it at bedtime, often diffusing it or applying it using a cupping method (rubbing a drop in my palms and inhaling). Tea tree oil has also become a favorite of mine after initially disliking its scent. Now, I use it frequently for my toenails. I have apprehensions about pedicures, fearing infections, and I prefer to manage my foot care myself. During the summer, when time is tight, I use Tea tree oil often. It serves as a natural disinfectant, possessing antifungal and antibacterial properties. I frequently mix a few drops with grapeseed oil and apply it using a cotton swab. I also enjoy diffusing peppermint oil while I work; it’s invigorating and enhances my energy levels. Another favorite is eucalyptus. I often use it for steam inhalation at the onset of a cold: I fill a bowl with hot water, add a few drops of the oil, cover my head with a towel, and inhale deeply.

FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER

Essential oils are incredibly concentrated, so a small amount goes a LONG way. Aside from Tea tree oil and Lavender oil, which I sometimes apply directly on my skin, I prefer not to use essential oils topically due to my sensitivity to skin allergies. When applied on the skin, essential oils should always be diluted in a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil. If you’re considering incorporating essential oils into your routine, particularly for DIY Beauty projects, please do thorough research and always perform a patch test—despite being “natural,” these oils are potent and can cause skin irritation, photosensitivity, and are generally not safe for internal consumption.

Be mindful of where you source your oils and the information you obtain; many multi-level marketing companies claim their oils can cure various ailments, and while some may genuinely believe that, it’s essential to approach with common sense.

I purchase my oils from Amazon and favor therapeutic-grade brands like Sky Organics, Now Foods, and Radha Beauty. My primary use for these oils is aromatherapy aimed at alleviating stress and anxiety, and they work wonderfully for me. While I’m no essential oil expert, my enjoyment in their use is undeniable!
