MISS MANNERS by Judith Martin, Nicholas Ivor Martin and Jacobina Martin
DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have been living with celiac disease for over ten years now, and it still stings when others bring gluten-laden cookies or cakes to social gatherings, leaving me with nothing to enjoy.
When I provide gluten-free treats, everyone can indulge without concern. If someone in the group follows a vegan diet, I make sure to prepare options that do not contain butter. These gatherings typically consist of four or five people, myself included. Is it inappropriate to express my disappointment when others fail to consider my dietary restrictions?
GENTLE READER: Yes, it is.

In navigating social situations, especially concerning dietary restrictions, it is essential to balance our feelings with courtesy. Miss Manners reminds us that polite communication fosters understanding and kindness.
In summary, while it is understandable to feel overlooked, it’s important to approach these situations with grace and understanding rather than confrontation. Expressing our needs through positive dialogue can lead to more inclusive gatherings in the future.
