Understanding Depression as a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis

Throughout my childhood, my closest companion was my grandfather, a man who radiated joy and warmth. As a candy-maker, he shared many delightful moments with me, particularly those spent crafting fudge together. However, the sweet life took a serious turn when, at the age of 69, he suffered a heart attack. This event marked a significant shift in his demeanor. He became more emotional, often shedding tears and displaying an unmistakable sense of sorrow. Sleep eluded him, and he was ultimately diagnosed with depression. At that time, I wasn’t aware that research indicates that depression is three times more prevalent in individuals after experiencing a heart attack.

This experience taught me the profound impact that physical health can have on mental well-being. It also highlighted the importance of compassion and understanding during challenging times.
