Growing Up in Chicago

Doug Hardtke’s fitness journey began in the suburbs of Chicago, where he was surrounded by a large family. As one of 30 cousins, family played a central role in his upbringing. Today, he is a father of two, living just a few blocks from his childhood home. Growing up in a city steeped in sports culture, football became his passion. From asking for shoulder pads as gifts to participating in football camps, Hardtke was captivated by the sport. It was during one of these camps that he discovered his love for weightlifting, leading to a lifelong commitment to fitness.

His first gym experience took place at a local Powerhouse Gym, where he learned the ropes by helping out with gym maintenance in exchange for training access. This connection to the fitness community fueled his enthusiasm, making exercise a fundamental aspect of his life.

Transitioning to Firefighting

As Hardtke’s love for football began to wane, he found inspiration in the world of firefighting. Motivated by the heroism he witnessed in parades and rescue stories, he pursued a career in fire services, landing a part-time job as a firefighter at the young age of 18. After completing the fire academy and paramedic school, he has since spent 17 years serving in his department. The camaraderie among his fellow firefighters reminds him of the bonds he formed with his football teammates, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in both arenas.

Being a first responder means stepping in during others’ most challenging moments, and Hardtke appreciates the support and connection he shares with his colleagues. “It’s like therapy for us, whether we’re joking around or discussing our feelings,” he explains.

Exploring Strongman Competitions

After retiring from football, Hardtke sought new challenges and entered the realm of strongman competitions. The idea of competing as the World’s Strongest Firefighter intrigued him, prompting him to train with unconventional weights like logs and sandbags. Partnering with fellow firefighter and competitor Frank Boniello, Hardtke honed his skills for the contest, relishing the excitement and adrenaline of the experience, even as he cheered for Boniello’s victory in Columbus, OH.

Passing on the Legacy

Today, Hardtke continues to serve his community while focusing on personal growth in fitness and health. Even though he won’t compete in the upcoming World’s Strongest Firefighter event, he plans to be there to support fellow competitors. He is passionate about instilling the same love for fitness in his children as he had in his youth. Training with his 12-year-old son, D.J., he sees immense potential in him—and even more in his four-year-old daughter, Addyline, who is dedicated to gymnastics. Together, Hardtke and his wife, Audrey, are nurturing a new generation of fitness enthusiasts, drawing inspiration from the principles found in those old M&F magazines.

Hardtke’s Go-To Workout

A cornerstone of the M&F legacy has been offering effective workouts, and Doug Hardtke is no exception. Here’s one of his favorite routines that helps him stay sharp for duty and maintain his fitness:

Warm-Up (3 Trisets with Minimal Rest)

  • Reverse Hyper: 20 reps
  • Lying Hamstring Curls: 20 reps
  • Belt Squat: 20 reps

“This warm-up prepares the main muscle groups we will be using,” he explains.

Strength Training

  • Trap Bar Deadlift: 5 sets of 5, 5, 5, 3, 1 (50-95% of max)
  • Bonus Widowmaker Set: 50% of max to failure.

“Take enough rest to feel fully recovered before your next set,” he advises.

Functional Training

  • Sandbag Hold Squat and Carry: 4 sets of 3 reps and a 50-foot carry.

“If the sandbag drops, I pick it up, do 3 squats, and finish the distance,” he says.

Triset Routine (3 Rounds with Minimal Rest)

  • Sled Push: 50 feet
  • Sled Pull: 50 feet
  • Farmer’s Carry: 100 feet

Bonus Tip: “A strong core is essential. Learning to brace your core can help in various situations, whether lifting a stretcher or making a critical grab on the fire ground.”

His dedication not only enhances his life but also paves the way for future generations to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
