Team Tressel Fitness Challenge Energizes Over 1,300 Schools
Published: February 13, 2026
In a significant initiative to promote health and well-being among students, Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel has launched the second round of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, engaging an impressive 1,376 schools across the state. This year, approximately 390,845 students have enrolled, taking part in a 30-day journey focused on establishing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals related to fitness, nutrition, and sleep.
Building Healthy Habits
At the core of this challenge lies a fundamental principle: cultivating healthy habits fosters confidence, discipline, and self-belief. Lt. Gov. Tressel remarked, “When our students commit to healthy habits in fitness, nutrition, and sleep, they’re not only strengthening their bodies and minds, but they’re also learning valuable lessons that will serve them throughout their lives.”
The initiative is part of Governor Mike DeWine’s broader efforts aimed at enhancing the health of Ohioans and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. The first round of the challenge, which concluded in December, saw nearly 183,000 students from over 700 schools participating.
Why Healthy Habits Matter
Governor DeWine expressed enthusiasm for the challenges’ positive impact, stating, “The excitement we’ve seen for the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge has been extraordinary. By helping children learn that exercise, nutrition, and quality sleep are enjoyable, we’re establishing a foundation for a generation that genuinely values wellness.”
Inspiring Role Models
To amplify the motivation during this second round, five former collegiate and professional athletes have joined as Challenge Captains. They will travel throughout the state alongside Tressel, visiting schools, and serving as role models for students focusing on lifelong healthy habits. The captains include:
- Donnie Evege – Former Ohio State University defensive back
- Roy Hall Jr. – Former NFL and Ohio State University receiver
- Sam Hubbard – Former NFL and Ohio State University defensive end
- Braxton Miller – Former NFL wide receiver and Ohio State University quarterback
- DeVier Posey – Former NFL and Ohio State University receiver
Conclusion
The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is more than just a program; it’s a movement towards healthier lifestyles among young people in Ohio. By participating in activities that emphasize fitness, nutrition, and restorative sleep, students are encouraged to embrace wellness as a lifelong journey. With the support of inspirational figures and a structured goal-setting approach, the challenge promises to leave a lasting impact on the health of Ohio’s future generations.
